My husband and I have just trekked from Lukla to Everest Base Camp and Mingmar was our guide. He arranged a porter for us, all lodges along the way, made sure we were safe at all times and made the long hard trek seem easier with his constant good humour. He ordered food for us, woke us up in the mornings and in fact made sure we had everything we needed. He brought us back down via a different route which was beautiful. His knowledge of the mountains, trekking routes and local people is superb, I would recommend him without hesitation.

A l...See More

Trekking Guide Reviews.I am a recently retired GP from Cumbria, UK, age 71, and have spent much of my leisure time walking and climbing in The English Lakes Fells and Crags; my wife Diane has also spent much time walking the fell tracks. 5 yrs ago we decided to tag a 10 day "taster" of the Everest Base Camp Trek onto the end of a trip to India ---- I randomly selected a company in Kathmandu to help arrange the necessary documents and support guide for us ---- we flew into Lukla from Kathmandu and were met by our appointed guide there, who had just finished guiding another client, who was departing on the plane on which we arrived ---- we saw him briefly, but his comments were " you will never get a better man than Mingmar" ----- how true these words came to be; on that first relatively short 10 days trek we made to Namche Bazaar he did attend our every need, and acted as Porter as well; unfortunately Diane had started with a severe gut upset the day before we left India, so she was quite weak from that, and suffered a setback on the first night's stay ---- Mingmar assessed the situation and decided we should just take it easy the following day, or even stay an extra night ---- but she recovered sufficiently for us to potter slowly on --- there was no pressure or hurry and Mingmar found us accommodation just when we were ready to stop again. The rest of that short trek couldn't have been better, with Mingmar " in command " ---- we resolved to return to attempt the full Base Camp Trek and a visit to Gokyo Lakes; This we did in 2013, and engaged Mingmar and 2 Porters -- part of his family to get us there and back ---- our own bespoke expedition.

We left Kathmandu on the 28th October, and were driven to Shivalaya from where we started our trek ---- we were 47 days on the trek, and we cannot praise Mingmar and his Porter Boys highly enough for the great care they took of us; our idea was that with our own team we could go as slow or as fast as we wanted, stop for rest days and vary the route as we wanted. Mingmar's knowledge and professionalism throughout was second to none, his English is good, so no problems communicating; he was well known by locals all along the routes we took, and other guides along the trail, and his knowledge of all things local and appertaining to Nepalese customs and religions was so interesting and we learned much ---- when it was time to stop for a midday meal, he would either find a recognized eating house or get a local to rustle up some simple food and drink for us --- we got to see the real Nepal, often sitting in local families' kitchens for our food; we had no rigid itinerary --- and as it was coming towards the end of our trekking day, Mingmar would go ahead to the next village and search for the best overnight stop he could find for us ---- ideally with western style toilets. Once settled for the night, our beds and night clothing layers organised, as temperatures dropped later in the evenings, we would meet in the communal room for food, Mingmar and the boys would take our order from the menu and when ready would serve it to us --- always making sure we were fed before they ---- the same routine applied to breakfast and lunch; we were not the most prompt at moving off each day, but there was never any pressure to "get going"

The pace was always ours, and if the going got a bit tough --- Mingmar' mantra was "slowly, slowly ". Mingmar's knowledge of the peaks around us all along the route was amazing ---- we counted ourselves so fortunate to have such a Professional, kind, considerate, incredibly strong and knowledgeable man to guide us ---- if he felt there was something special for us to see, he would make sure we got to see it ----- 47 days we were all together and not one cross word, every aspect of our needs were looked after and he would go extra miles to make sure we had what we needed --- we became a family on the move; there were occasions on the trail where the track was rough and steep on the downhill, and he was always there to give a supportive arm to Diane ( downhill was not Diane's favourite ) sometimes over quite a distance. Because we took our time on the trek, we had no problems with Altitude sickness. He took care of all the administrative bits of our return flight from Lukla, making sure we were booked into the flight 2 days before, also worthy of note he dealt with all our documentation at the various checkpoints en route ---- being well known in the area and many others was a great advantage.

In summary ----- We have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Mingmar Tamang as your guide and guardian who puts you first --- once known he will never be forgotten ---- if you are considering hiring Mingmar and would like to chat with myself -- please feel free to call me on 00441539433573. Obviously I have pictures of our trek and would be happy to send then to you etc. I can't wait to return !!!!
